How to Put MBA on a Resume (Examples & Exact Phrases)
Exact phrases and copy-paste snippets for listing an MBA on a resume. Full-time, EMBA, and in-progress formats covered. Free ATS check at ResumeScorer.
I have looked at hundreds of MBA resumes. The same mistake every time: two years and $120,000 on a degree, listed as "MBA, Harvard, 2024." No concentration. No honors. Nothing that shows a recruiter what actually happened there.
Knowing how to put MBA on a resume right is not hard. Almost nobody does it.
TL;DR
To put an MBA on a resume, list it in your Education section with the full degree name, concentration, institution, graduation date, and GPA or honors if strong — and mirror the phrasing from the job posting so the ATS matches it.
Where to Put an MBA on Your Resume
Where you are in your career determines this.
Recent MBA grad (0–3 years out): Education goes above Work Experience. Your degree is the most recent and most impressive credential. Lead with it.
Mid-career professional (5+ years): Work Experience goes first. Education moves below it. Your job title carries more weight than the degree at this point.
Career pivot: Pull one line into your Summary — "MBA-trained strategist with 8 years in financial services transitioning to consulting." Then list the full degree in Education below.
Executive or EMBA candidate: Work Experience leads. EMBA goes in Education below it. One Summary mention is fine if the program is well-known — but keep it to one line.

How to Format an MBA Entry (Exact Wording)
The full format looks like this:
Degree, Concentration | Institution Name | City, State | Month Year – Month Year GPA: X.X/4.0 (if 3.5 or above) | Honors: Beta Gamma Sigma | Dean's List: 2 semesters
Rules:
- Full name first. "Master of Business Administration (MBA)" — ATS systems don't always match abbreviations. - Include your concentration. "MBA, Finance" matches more keyword filters than "MBA" alone. - Month + Year for recent degrees. "May 2024" not "2024" — be specific if you graduated within five years. - GPA only if 3.5 or above. Below that, leave it off entirely. - List honors that have names: Beta Gamma Sigma, Dean's List, named fellowships.
For layout options, see our Resume Formatter.
Copy-and-Paste Snippets
Full-time MBA — Education section entry:
Master of Business Administration (MBA), Strategy & Operations
Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University | Evanston, IL | Aug 2022 – Jun 2024
GPA: 3.7/4.0 | Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society | Dean's List: 3 semesters
- Led cross-functional capstone engagement for a Fortune 500 retail client; delivered market entry recommendation adopted by the client's executive team
Executive MBA (EMBA) or in-progress MBA — Education section entry:
Master of Business Administration (MBA), Healthcare Management — In Progress, Expected May 2026
Booth School of Business, University of Chicago | Chicago, IL
Relevant coursework: Corporate Finance, Operations Strategy, Healthcare Economics, Organizational Behavior
If your EMBA is complete, drop the "In Progress" line and add a graduation date. Mid-program: the coursework line shows recruiters what you're studying — more useful than a blank entry with a future date.
How to Show MBA-Related Experience and Skills
The degree doesn't do the work alone. The skills you built in the program need to show up in your Experience bullets and Skills section too.
Three ways to do this:
- Consulting projects → Experience bullets. List live client engagements under a "Projects" section. "Led team of 4 MBAs on supply chain audit for a $300M manufacturer; identified $4.2M in annual savings." - Finance skills → quantified bullets. "Built 3-statement LBO model to evaluate $85M acquisition target; analysis presented to investment committee." - Skills section: "Financial modeling," "Corporate strategy," "MBA-level data analysis" — mirror the job posting's exact language.

Quick Checklist Before Submitting Your Resume
- [ ] Degree listed as full name first: "Master of Business Administration (MBA)" - [ ] Concentration included in the degree line - [ ] GPA listed only if 3.7 or above — or left off entirely below 3.5 - [ ] Graduation date formatted as Month Year for degrees within the last 5 years - [ ] Capstone, consulting project, or club leadership listed if it produced a real outcome
ATS Tips (Quick)
- Write the full degree name at least once — "Master of Business Administration (MBA)" not just "MBA" - Name the school in full before abbreviating: "Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania" - One location per credential — don't list the MBA in both Education and Certifications
FAQ
Should I list MBA before or after work experience? If you graduated within the last three years, Education goes first. After that, Work Experience leads — your job history carries more weight than the degree at that point.
How do I list an MBA I haven't finished yet? Write the full degree line, add "— In Progress, Expected Month Year" after the program name, and list three to five relevant courses. Don't hide it. Recruiters see in-progress degrees regularly and it's not a problem.
Does the MBA school name change where I list it? No — the format is the same regardless of program prestige. What changes is whether you mention the school in your Summary. If you're applying to roles where the brand name is a genuine signal (consulting, finance, PE), one mention in the Summary is reasonable. Everywhere else, Education section only.
Conclusion
The MBA took years to earn. Don't let a lazy resume entry waste it. Full name, concentration, dates, GPA if it's good — and one line that shows what you actually did there.

How long should my resume be?
Most resumes should be one page for less than 10 years of experience, or two pages for more extensive careers. Focus on relevance over length.
What format is best for ATS systems?
ATS systems work best with simple, clean formats. Use standard fonts, clear section headings, and avoid tables, columns, and graphics. PDF is generally safe, but some older ATS prefer .docx.
How do I optimize my resume for keywords?
Match keywords from the job description naturally throughout your resume. Include them in your summary, experience bullets, and skills section. Use both abbreviated and full forms (e.g., 'SEO' and 'Search Engine Optimization').
Should I include a cover letter?
Yes, when possible. A tailored cover letter can differentiate you from other candidates and explain gaps, career changes, or specific qualifications that your resume alone may not convey.
